SubscribeToday is the day I’ve been waiting for. Today is the day I start a new book.
Starting a new book is always an exciting moment, the beginning of a journey with new friends. I’ll be off to see fantastic places and witness amazing deeds. There will be laughs and tears. There will be moments of deep frustration. There will be discovery, both of the tale and myself.
Many of you reading this post are also heading out on your NaNoWriMo journey. Here’s to wishing you a pleasant trip. I hope you find time to drop me a note once in awhile from the road.

I thought starting was going to be the hardest part. Nope. Looks like the obstacle of 49,492 words left to write is the hardest part.
I’ve started! I just finished 1000 words of ‘throat clearing’. Now I’m off for a 4 mile run and then we’re painting my son’s room, but I hope to get another 1000 done by the end of the day.
It’s my first time and it’s pretty fun so far.

I’m already nervous about the whole thing–so nervous, in fact, that instead of writing my quota for today, I’m avoiding it by reading blogs!
I can’t get my word counter at the NaNo site to update, but I put together 1329 words into sentences that seem to be cohesive so far today. Jamie, you’ve got yourself an awesome start!

@Oktober5 I had a similar experience this morning. Found myself checking in on a few comments, emails, twitter… yadda yadda. Eventually, I just cracked my knuckles and got to work.
@Tamara Thanks! 1329 isn’t so shabby either! I was lucky to get my word count in during one of the calm spells on the site. I also decided to update my wordcount here in the header of the site each day.

Hey – happy exciting new novel to you! I’m loving mine so far – 2800 words for the first day. I’ve learned the last couple of years to write as much as I can when I have the time, because things have a way of happening.

I liked the “throat clearing” comment and plan to abscond it for myself. I must say though, that while the first week is typically slow, this is the worst that I remember. I couldn’t even read logged-out let alone log on and get info to my sub-group. Aarrgh!
For east coasters, 3 am tends to be a good time to update your counts until the less-than-committed fall away.

@Deb I think they had a huge rush of participants this year. Chris put a post up on the front page about the record hits… Of course, it could all be a plot to get people to write instead of reading posts.
