@Puck I wonder if it's the material that made them faint or the fact that he read it out loud! :)

Very nice post. I got to see Palahniuk speak at Bookshop Santa Cruz a few years ago. He was intense. Read this piece that made a person near us faint.

Great as always.

MUWAHAHAHAHA....then I shall be a great writer because Goddess knows I've been a hella scoundrel for a good part of my life ;)

But seriously, if you consider that in America we label you a scoundrel if you do not adhere to the "conventional lifestyle" and then you consider that a writing is often served by experience and to experience much here in the U.S. means you probably are not bound to a cubicle somewhere 60 hours a week and sitting in front of your TV the rest of the time...well then, of course we writers are all scoundrels.

@Karen Both parties can claim equal share of scoundrels in office! Though frankly, I'm having a hard time coming up with a name who wouldn't fit the bill. :)

I agree with your comment about literary critics. The best are downright hilarious. Julian Barnes is a great example, so is Edmund White. They also happen to be damn fine authors too.

@Ulla Oh I would definitely place Goethe in the scoundrel category. No one can write of the devil as he did and not have a close affinity. :)

@Stefani I think in many ways Twain and Palahniuk are telling the same stories, stories about America as they see it. It isn't always pretty but my god it's almost always funny... often to the point of being uncomfortable.

Great post Jamie with interesting parallels. I think literary critics are humorous. I am not waving a banner for scoundrels but the US has quite a history of scoundrels, some have even gone on to be President.
